Two antique collar fragments, from the same collar, measuring 9 by 3.5 inches, circa 1850 from Philadelphia, white cotton Broderie Anglais work. Wonderful hand embroidered flowers and leaves and tiny eyelets in the finest stitches. The edges are hand finished in buttonhole stitches forming pretty scallops. Condition is poor, it is torn and stained. These collars come from the Batcheler estate in Philadelphia, PA. The house was a treasure trove of early American furniture and textiles. Included with the collars was the following note: "These collars, though badly torn in spots, should be preserved as examples of the high skill and art of needlework of the 19th century - first half. These are both Fritz Chandler and Harrision Hartshouse items - country mid city - standards the same." Another notation dated them to 1840-1860, as well.
